INSAND: Redefining Fitness with Sand-Based Training

In a world where sports participation dwindles as age increases, Reid Priddy noticed a troubling trend. During his Olympic career, he lived and breathed team sports—a life rich with purpose, camaraderie, and structured training. But upon retiring, he was struck by the stark absence of these elements. Purpose, motivation, and community were now self-directed challenges, and the solution wasn’t as simple as joining a gym. Traditional fitness spaces were heavily focused on weightlifting—valuable for many but only a fraction of an athlete’s life. Where was the movement? Where was the joy of playing? Where was the team?

This personal crossroads was mirrored by larger societal challenges. Youth sports participation is thriving, but as athletes progress through high school and beyond, participation rates drop significantly, leaving only a small fraction continuing to play after school. Reid saw that the language of sports was shifting. For young children, it was an open invitation: Come play!. Inclusive, accessible, built on healthy values and fun. But as athletes progressed, the message became something entirely different: Be elite. Expensive programs replaced playfulness with pressure, exclusivity, and a focus on specialization.

This shift left many behind—not just youth but adults as well. What about the millions who didn’t make it to college or professional levels? And what about people who wanted to play not for competition but for health, connection, and fun?

The Vision: A New Way to Play and Train

Meanwhile, fitness was booming, but it was largely weight-room-centric, far removed from the real-life athleticism of team sports. Reid knew from experience that an athlete’s training was rarely centered around lifting weights. It was about dynamic movement, practicing skills, and engaging in the activity itself. He began to question how fitness became synonymous with static exercises and weights rather than dynamic, sport-driven movement.

Volleyball, especially beach volleyball, stood out as a potential bridge between these gaps. Its unique combination of athleticism, teamwork, and full-body engagement offered both fun and fitness. But there was a barrier: the game is highly technical. For beginners, lack of skill often meant no rallies, no flow, and no chance to experience the physical and social benefits.

Reid envisioned something different—a space where people of all ages could learn, train, and play together for decades. A place where movement, athleticism, and connection came naturally, whether you were a seasoned athlete or just starting your fitness journey.
